Clients report getting help with breathing properly

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

City Sports Massage’s Jon specialises in helping clients discover natural healthy breathing. It helps relaxation, oxygenates muscles, and reduces stress. It often goes hand in hand with bad posture. Check out the latest new quotes below…

“Jon taught me to breath properly. I hadn’t realised up until this point that I held my breath quite a lot. I had always wondered why swimming tired me out so much, after a length of the pool I needed to stop despite being a competent swimmer. I then realised I was holding my breath for the entire length, thus depriving my muscles of oxygen!

He also taught me to be aware of the tension in my body and to relax my muscles. But what I value most is the expert advise I receive, and knowing I am in safe and experienced hands.”

I appreciate Jon’s honesty and if I need work on something, such as a particular area, he will tell me, and equally if I don’t, he will also tell me.”

Project Manager

“I had a sports massage appointment with you last Thursday in order to help prepare me for my jujitsu grading. I would just like to say that I passed the grading, and to say thank you. My body felt incredibly relaxed and I was able to breath in the same natural manner that you advised during my appointment. It made a world of difference.”

Sean Adjei
Jujitsu practitioner

And on a more general treatment;

“You gave me the best massage I’ve ever had in 2006. sadly I left for nyc that year – I’ve had hundreds of massages since but they haven’t come close. Thanks!”

How to relieve a stiff neck and shoulders in 6 easy ways!

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Many folks wonder if massage will ease their neck pain. Often such discomfort is accompanied by RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) pain in the arms. Sometimes there’s numbness in the fingers too. In other words, the type of scenario that’s built up from long, stressful hours at the desk.

In this situation massage will certainly help. But to get even MORE out of your massage, check out these easy ways to ease neck, shoulder and arm pain.

1. Move
Neck pain and shoulder stiffness are often caused by a very simple reason – lack of movement. So move! Slowly shrug and rotate your shoulders, turn your head left and right, look up and down. Do it all sloooowly. Feel it!

2. Drink water
Our bodies get dehydrated working all day long. This makes the muscles stiffer than normal – our bodies need water to lubricate movement – so drink.

3. Have regular breaks
Combine a ‘movement break’ (see number 1) with a ‘water break’ (see number 2) in your daily routine. Every 20 – 40 minutes. Eventually it will become second nature. When it does become second nature even the male of our species is able to multi-task, often stretching the shoulders AND looking at the computer screen at the same time. C’mon fellas – lets show those girls our multi-tasking ninja moves.

4. Have a hot bath
Heat from the water will bring fresh blood to the stiff areas. It will lengthen and loosen tight muscles and allow more movement. But don’t fall asleep, wake up in a cold bath and be back at square one ;-)

5. Stretch
Think of pussycats. Do they need stretching manuals? Do they ‘time’ their stretches? No. They ‘feel’ what’s going on in their bodies. If it feels nice – they carry on. If it hurts, they stop. Feel it. Learn about your body. Don’t be intimidated by it. It’s yours!

6. Get a massage
Even if you’ve done all of the above, and you’ve persuaded your other half to give you a shoulder rub, the chances are (especially if you’ve left it too long) you’ll need a professional to get into those difficult spots. Go to a sports and remedial massage therapist. Make sure they’re reputable and qualified. If you live in the UK make sure they have a BTEC qualification and are a member of the Institute of Sports and Remedial Massage. If the therapist has a website check out their testimonials before you book.

A good therapist will be able to show you all of the techniques described above, and more (although we reckon you can probably manage the bath on your own. And the glass of water for that matter).

Please note: If you think you may have an injury or anything more serious than work posture-related stiffness and pain, please consult a medical practitioner immediately.

Golfers, sports massage, and stretching for relief of low back pain!

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

At City Sports Massage we feel very privileged to be treating a number of golfers these days. Golf players need sports massage! Often the day job will be sedentary, so strolling up to the golf course, and suddenly expecting the body to perform the extremely fast, dynamic action of teeing off is asking for trouble!

Often when a golfer first comes in for a massage, they’re quite confused as to why their bodies are in so much pain. Often they’re wondering if it’s the end of their golf careers?

Almost as soon as we stop growing our body starts ‘drying up’. When we’re young we can go out, drink endless drinks, party until dawn and *still* get up and play football without it hurting. As we get older (and it’s most often noticed in our late twenties/early thirties), it ain’t as easy as it used to be ;-)

The answer is usually simple. We need to warm up before exercise or sports activity. Warm up *well*. That doesn’t mean a ‘Jane Fonda’ workout. It means targeted, specific stretches that are relevant to YOU.

And by using massage for golfing injuries (or running, cycling, football or other sports injuries) and following up with stretching, our favourite pastime can last a lifetime.

Now *thats* a ‘hole in one’ eh?

Where is the best place to get a massage in London?

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Where is the best place to get a massage in London? Well, if you ask our clients then they’ll tell you – City Sports Massage! Whether you’re looking for a deep tissue massage, sports massage or even just a massage then here’s a few reasons you should give us a try!

Dancers say that we’re the best ’sports massage for dancers’ because we’re not afraid to ‘get in there’ deeply. But equally we’re happy to work gently too. Sometimes we see clients whom life has been throwing around a little recently (it happens to *all* of us!) and that would be just one example of when we’d chill things out a little. I recently massaged a new client and they became very emotional during the massage. This happens often as massage can be a real emotional release. She was determined she wanted to work through it, and have a good old fashioned blub! After the therapeutic massage she said that she was pleasantly surprised – as she’d always thought that sports massage had to be brutal and unforgiving. But just like every person is different, every treatment is different. And though we might need pummeling one week, the next week might feel totally different.

It’s difficult to find a good massage therapist in London. The best massage therapist will always be sensitive to the changing requirements of each individual. We don’t do formulaic body rubs here. We listen intuitively, and we respond accordingly.

Sports Massage or Deep Tissue Massage in London?

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

I often get asked in my massage clinic in Central London – what’s the difference between deep tissue massage and sports massage? The answer is; deep tissue massage courses are generally shorter and not as involved as sports massage courses. So someone learning ’sports massage’ techniques to treat sports injuries, or work-related issues such as RSI, will be better equipped than someone who has done a basic ‘deep tissue’ course. In a nutshell, if your therapist is qualified with recognised sports massage qualifications (such as BTEC) then they will be doing deep tissue massage, and more!

City Sports Massage Launch Party Photos now online!

Monday, July 7th, 2008

What a party we had last week!

It was, as predicted, a stormin’ success! We went right up to the venue’s 110 capacity! There was a queue waiting even before we opened at 6:30pm, and the first 50 people were through the door before we had time to breathe!

The venue was ‘The Player’, in Soho, London and they clearly knew how to run a smooth bar and kitchen. The delicious, raw-food canapes were made and given out by Sophie of Blissful Health.

All night guests were expressing disbelief that there were people there that they didn’t expect to see. The world suddenly seemed smaller. “I can’t believe you massage my ex-bosses husband’s friend” and so it went on!

The crowd were just *so* amazingly friendly. Everyone commented on this – the venue, the performers and the other guests.

I’ve gotta say a special thank you to all the performers who appeared at this event (you can see the full line up on the previous post) and also to Sean Mooney for his fabulous stage management services, and Dave Chameleon for his cheeky, always spot-on compeering. I felt so lucky to have such generous, talented people willing to work at the City Sports Massage Launch Party!

The venue is ‘The Player’, a members club found hidden away next door to Agent Provocateur at 8 Broadwick Street W1F 8HN.

The date is Wednesday 2nd July.

The venue is discretely marked by a simple, small blue sign above the door. The interior is a chic 1970’s cocktail bar. A place that glamourous air hostesses and handsome pilots might have brushed shoulders with ravishing film stars.

From 6:30pm you will be greeted by myself and new City Sports Massage therapist Michelle, with a refreshing cocktail, a voucher, a raffle ticket and a big smile!

The entertainment starts at 7pm sharp and will include;

Snakebone! – Tony Diavlo’s trio playing swing and blues!

Michele Laine of Fling – World class acrobatic madness!

The Tropics of Cancer – Divine and quirky duo singing songs to transport you away.

Kitty Bang Bang – Devastatingly beautiful burlesque ballerina!

Sumi Sumatra – An exotic and mesmerising Balinese dancer with a hint of 1920’s naughtiness!

And keeping the party swinging, fresh from the burlesque / retro scene;
DJs El Nino & Lady Kamikaze (Lady Luck, Black Cotton Club)

PLEASE NOTE;
We want YOU there – there is NO dress code. Glam if you can, but many will be coming straight from work/their probation officer etc.

We have exclusive use of the venue until 9pm. After that the club’s regular guests will be joining us to party until 12 midnight. Availability of your complementary cocktail is on a first come first served basis! – be early!

You are encouraged to bring along your companions who you feel may benefit from a massage!

This event WILL be busy – be early!

London Marathon Runners and Sports Injuries

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

London Marathon runners needing sports massage have been flooding through the doors of our Mayfair and Highbury clinics this month! It’s really exciting to share the buzz of those preparing for such an incredible feat.

It’s in this next few weeks of marathon training that sports injuries often happen. We’ve noticed that once an 18 miler has been run, often the hard training athlete will try to go *that* bit faster, feel a ‘twang’ and then carry on through the pain. DON’T! If you feel pain, aside from the merciless agony of lactic acid and bursting lungs that is, STOP! and apply the R.I.C.E. principles;

REST
ICE
COMPRESSION
ELEVATION

We’ve treated too many marathon runners for sports injuries such as torn muscles in the weeks running immediately up to the marathon, it’s a classic scenario – so please take heed and avoid giving us all your cash for constant treatments!

You can see what some of our clients say here…
