Introduction

All of our massage techniques can be drawn upon to provide you with the massage that you want. And if you’re not sure what you want? Don’t worry, you’re in our experienced hands, and we will quickly get a feel of what is ‘right’. Your massage is all about you and what is right for you – so please don’t ever feel like you have to put up with pressure that is too heavy, or too light!

I’ve had two treatments now after the first made me feel nearly 20 years younger and full of vigour. After many years of regular training as a competitive swimmer life has got a lot more sedentary and desk-bound and I’ve stiffened up with it. Jon provided a good strong focused massage that really targeted the problems. I’ve been able (and motivated), to get out and do some training again.

Sports Massage

Many people presume that sports massage is solely for sports people – it is not! Sports massage is for anyone who desires a deep massage that really works the muscles. It’s invaluable to athletes who need pre and post event work – either relaxing or invigorating the muscles in preparation for a competition, and then afterwards flushing them out – helping the sore muscles detoxify, realign and heal in preparation for the next bout of action.

For those who don’t play sports but perhaps work in an office environment, sitting in the same position for long periods, or carrying out repetitive tasks, sports massage is ideal. It is extremely effective for loosening tight muscles and refreshing aching limbs.

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage is a massage technique that provides a remedy to muscular dysfunction. It separates scar tissue and realigns muscle tissue, with an aim to restore the body to a pain free, balanced state. It uses such techniques as Soft Tissue Release (STR) Neuromuscular Technique (NMT) and Muscle Energy Technique (MET). Sometimes Remedial massage can be a little uncomfortable, but only in a way that you will instinctively know is beneficial. At City Sports Massage you are never taken beyond your limit and are encouraged to communicate freely.

We strongly encourage body awareness and self-treatment - by teaching stretching techniques that can be used outside of clinic time and focusing on investigating, and if necessary changing habits that are causing muscular distress. This maximises the effect of the treatment, making it more worthwhile for your body and more cost effective for your wallet.

Scar Massage

Jon specialises in working to reduce the appearance of scars and the subsequent adhesions post operative surgery. Although many therapists site 'scar tissue massage' as one of their modalities, they are usually referring to simple adhesions under the skin, rather than visible scarring. Jon works to reduce visible scars anywhere on the body and has found particular success working with breast reduction/enhancement scars. In the case of augmentation this leads to mobilization of the implants which have often become 'stuck' over time, causing pain and/or discomfort. Where clients have postural issues such as slumped, painful shoulders, working the chest area has a multitude of benefits - as freeing up the chest allows the muscles in the back to re-establish a correct position.

Post-mastectomy clients often say that it can be difficult to find a massage therapist suitable to work with scars — and we welcome anyone who finds themselves in this position.

Fascia (which coats our muscles) can be severely disrupted during the surgery process and it can be incredibly helpful to have this type of deep-tissue massage work done. It increases range-of-movement and is extremely beneficial for general well-being.

Please note: If you are NOT in full remission when attending your appointment, please bring written approval from your Doctor.

Scars are a sign of experience of life.
With every new experience comes new knowledge, and the potential to grow. Those who feel disassociated with their bodies due to scarring are encouraged to reclaim awareness and pride, feel re-empowered and get back in touch with their newly-modified bodies!
